Course 21G Bachelor of Science in Global Studies and Languages - Major in French Studies

Planning Your Major
The following are the steps to take if you are interested in majoring in French Studies:

  1. Meet with the Undergraduate Academic Administrator, Joyce Roberge (email) in 14N-310, x3-4550 to chart out proposed schedule and requirements.
  2. Discuss your plans with the French Major Advisor, Bruno Perreau (email),  to determine whether your schedule and course load will allow you to complete all the units necessary for prospective major.

 

Requirements

11 French subjects beginning at Level III which may include a pre-thesis and thesis*.

To satisfy the requirement that students complete two Communication-intensive subjects in the major, students must take 21G.306 and 21G.307. Registration for 21G.306 and 21G.307 must be simultaneous with one of the following range of subjects: 21G.308, 21G.310, 21G.311, 21G.312, 21G.315, 21G.320, 21G.321, 21G.322, 21G.325J, 21G.341, 21G.346 or 21G.347.

PLEASE NOTE, up to 72 units counting towards the French major can overlap with the HASS GIRs.  If a French Major subject is also counting as a GIR, its units cannot count towards the 180 units required beyond GIRs.

 

Other Option

21E or 21S (Joint degree with French and Engineering or Science)
In addition to your Engineering or Science requirements, you need 9 subjects beginning with Level III in French which may include pre-thesis and thesis*.

PLEASE NOTE, up to 72 units counting towards the French major can overlap with the HASS GIRs.  There cannot be overlap between the GIR and E/S subjects.  If a French Major subject is also counting as a GIR, its units cannot count towards the 180 units required beyond GIRs.

* Pre-thesis and thesis are reserved for students who have completed most or all of the subjects offered in a particular language group and demonstrate outstanding competence in the particular field of study. Normally, it is recommended that students substitute two additional subjects in place of a thesis option.
