The Story of Stone: Intertextuality, Ancient Chinese Stone Lore, and the Stone Symbolism

Winner of the Joseph Levenson Prize for the best pre-20th century China published in 1992, this  study of three of the most familiar premodern novels in China--all concerning stones endowed with the magical properties--attempts to reconstruct ancient Chinese stone lore. Bringing together Chinese myth, religion, folklore, art, and literature, this book explores the claims of the cultural past upon the present, analyzes intertextuality within Chinese traditions, and examines the accretion and transformation of the folkloric stone/jade into literary imagery.
