Topic for Fall 2007: The Diasporic Generation. Examines some major concerns of the South Asian Diasporic writers: imagined homeland, inherited memories, and forging new identities. Writers include Salman Rushdie, Jhumpa Lahiri, Amitav Ghosh, Shyam Selvadurai, Monica Ali, Kalyan Ray, Nilita Vachani, and Mohsin Hamid. Examines authors from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Explores texts in English as well as those written in the regional languages with translation. Topics include modernity and post-colonialism, shifting questions of class, gender and sexuality, narrative strategies in the diasporic literature, effects of globalization and hybridity and the tensions between traditional values and social change.
