Readings and discussion of short stories by major French authors of the nineteenth century (Balzac and Maupassant), as well as by French and Francophone authors of the twentieth century (Camus, Sarraute, Djebar, Conde, and Tournier). Special attention to a close study of this particular "short" literary genre, as well as to broader issues of gender and culture. Taught in French.
